Timothy's Story

Timothy was born on February 1, 1998.  By all accounts, he developed normally for the first year of his life.  As he grew older, we discovered that he wasn't communicative with the rest of us.  Our first thought was that he was simply quiet and reserved, and we took no further notice of it.  In October, 1999, we had his speech and hearing checked; we were devastated to learn that at 20 months old, his developmental level had regressed to that of a six-month-old child.  We were referred to our county MR/DD board for services and further intervention.

In January, 2000, we attended a support group at the clinic where we tested Timothy; the participants were other parents whose children were diagnosed with developmental deficits/delays.  It was here that we first heard the terms "autism" and "autistic," but we dismissed that notion out of hand for Timothy.  As we continued with the support group, we observed Timothy's behaviors and began to suspect otherwise.  Finally, we had him evaluated by the late Dr. Bonnie Ritchie, who issued a formal diagnosis of Autism on April 19, 2000.

This began a six month process to establish an education plan for Timothy.  Working with Dr. Ritchie, we selected a consultant skilled in training programs for children with ASD conditions.  The consultant, Jennifer LaLuzerne, helped us set up a program using Applied Behavioral Analysis, which is designed to guide ASD children toward appropriate communication and responses to stimuli.  We began with our initial workshop on October 28, 2000; participating were the consultant and a small group of people selected as Timothy's therapy team.  The team's primary function was to provide Timothy's therapy in a one-on-one setting.  We turned the finished portion of our home's basement into his therapy area, setting up a table and cabinets for his supplies.  We also enrolled Timothy into the early childhood education program administered by the county MR/DD board.

Timothy has progressed from a severely autistic, non-verbal child into a more high-functioning person.  Timothy is now completing the third grade at a high-achievement public elementary school.  He is in transition with his therapy program, having completed the initial five-year plan established by Jen. Timothy continues to receive therapy as performed by his current team members.  Additional services are administered by our county MR/DD board.

Thanks, Jen!

And thanks to all team members, past and present, for the difference you make in Timothy's life!
